  1. 1913- . Polish composer and conductor, born
  2. in Warsaw. His early music, dissonant and
  3. powerful (First Symphony 1947), was
  4. criticized by the communist government, so he
  5. adopted a more popular style. With the
  6. lifting of artistic repression, he quickly
  7. adopted avant-garde techniques, including
  8. improvisatory and aleatoric forms. He has
  9. written chamber, vocal, and orchestral music,
  10. including three symphonies, Livre pour
  11. orchestre 1968 and Mi-parti 1976.
  12.
